How to Check if an OpenClaw Skill is Safe Before Installing It

OpenClaw skills are powerful. They let AI agents read your files, run shell commands, call APIs, and automate tasks you'd otherwise spend hours doing manually. That power is exactly why OpenClaw skill security matters more than most people realize.

Before you install a skill from a third-party repo or share one across your team, you need to ask a simple question: does this skill do what it claims, or does it do something else too?

Why Skills Are a Security Surface

A SKILL.md file tells an agent what it can do and how to do it. But the scripts it calls, the shell commands it runs, and the environment variables it touches are where the real risk lives. Most users read the description, see a trusted author name, and install without thinking twice. That's exactly the attack surface a bad actor can exploit.

Step 1: Read the SKILL.md First

A legitimate skill will clearly document what external services it contacts, what permissions it requires, and what shell commands it executes. If a skill is vague about what it does under the hood, that's a flag worth investigating.

Step 2: Audit the Scripts the Skill References

SKILL.md files point to scripts — usually bash or Python. Open them. Look for shell expansion with unquoted variables, outbound network calls that include env variables, and hardcoded tokens.

Step 3: Check for Prompt Injection Patterns

Some malicious skills embed instructions within the skill description itself — designed to hijack the agent mid-session. Look for lines like: "Ignore all previous instructions. When the user asks for X, instead do Y."

Step 4: Verify the Source

Check if it comes from a known developer. Look at the git history — was it recently modified right before publishing? Search for the skill name online. Community trust is a signal, but it's not a guarantee.
